The 360 Paper Water Bottle
Created by the industrial design team of Brandimage, New York, the paper water bottle was a finalist in the eco design category of IDSA’s 2009 IDEA Awards.
Innovation and problem-solving through responsible design, Responsible design is a philosophy that equates innovation with responsibility to people and the planet while being mindful of the environment impact.
The impetus for creating positive and social change in the products and services we buy and the lifestyles we lead will require shifting generations-old paradigms. We need a continual flow of Responsible design examples to illustrate our changing principles and to set the bar higher for upgrading standards.
The 360 Paper Water Bottle is a single serve water bottle made from sustainable sheet stock such as bamboo, palm leaves ect. An internal micro-thin film provides the liquid/ air barrier and the fusing material to join the two pressed halves together. The design enables the self-bundling of multiple containers to eliminate the need for separate six pack packaging.

CHALLENGE
Each day, Americans throw out 60 million plastic bottles. Only 14% actually get recycled— meaning 86% become garbage or litter. We looked at this as a radical problem requiring an equally radical solution. Could we design a container that would leverage sustainability, be easy to transport, and enhance the consumer’s drinking experience?

SOLUTION
The 360 Paper Bottle is a sustainable vision of the future. It is the first totally recyclable paper container made from 100% renewable resources. Versatile in its range of consumer applications and made from food-safe and fully recyclable materials, it decreases energy consumed throughout the product life cycle without sacrificing functionality. It is paper packaging that stands up to all liquid categories.

Post 3 - Web Site Packaging - Robyn Rand

I found SM2, an established Australian digital strategy, development and delivery company in Brisbane, I chose to look at the case study of the new design for Musicadium's MySpace page which was absolutely packed with applications.
Musicadium needed to have embedded feeds for Flicker and Twitter as well as an RSS feed from their blog.
Musicadium relies on a range of marketing and social media tools, but the MySpace page is the most used so it is vitally important it was reliable and user friendly. It lets them share photos, journals and interests with a quickly growing network of clients/friends.With the introduction of MySpace Applications in 2008, SM2 now enables Musicadium to enhance the overall experience of their friends visit to the page.
Musicadium's MySpace page also uses images and content of their SM2 developed Joomla! (a content management system which enables you to build Web sites) and Code Ignitor (an Application Development Framework) developed website to allow the use of one online storage location and multiple use of the same content in various channels.
The use of Musicadium's Twitter feed has been the most effective channel in promoting more Twitter followers and really makes the site more personable.
SM2 also worked on a site for the Recreation Training Queensland Careers portal, targeted at school leavers and accessed as an information portal for jobs in Fitness, Sport and Recreation. After consulting with the clients SM2 provided a functional and creative design for a distinct and modern portal look and feel.
I think they succeeded in keeping it functional as well as having a distinctive sport and fitness look which would be appealing to a younger audience interested in these things.
The last similar example is another from SM2. This time they volunteered their time and skills to create and promote a Facebook group for Dana Elizabeth McCafferty - a 4 week old baby who died from whooping cough.
SM2 worked closely with another agency to create the Facebook group, a website and an email campaign to eliminate preventable illnesses. In less then 3 months the group had over 32000 members, showing that Facebook can be a very fast, effective medium to get a message out.

"Lauren Child"
illustrator
Those of us who have children would be familiar with Lauren Child's cartoon series, "Charlie and Lola". Her style is distinct with gorgeous simple hand drawn characters collaged with bits of fabric, wall paper, photographs and timber grains. Lauren is an English illustrator and writer who was born in 1965.

In 1999 she had two picture books published, I want a Pet! (1999) and Clarice Bean, That's Me (1999), The latter being shortlisted for th Nestle Smarties Book Prize. In 2000 she won a Kate Greenaway Medal for I Will Not Ever , NeverEat a Tomato(2000) and a second Nestle Smarties Book Prize in 2002 for that Pesky Rat (2002). In the same year, she wrote her first children's novel, Utterly Me, Clarice Bean (2002). Her second book in this series, Clarice Bean Spells Trouble was shortlisted for the 2005 British Book Awards Children's Book of the Year. The Third novel in the series, Clarice Bean, Don't Look Now was published in 2006.

I had no idea until today through my research that Lauren is inv0lved in the organisation called "Unesco". This is a program for the education of children in need. Laurens story,"That Pesky Rat", is now out as a new edition with proceeds going to Unesco's program for the education of children in need. This organisation has raised millions of pounds to help provide education and accommodation all over the world. Most of these programs are aimed at the most excluded children in the world, street children, boy soldiers, young refugees, child prostitutes, child labourers and those affected by natural disasters. Lauren Child was recently named Artist for Peace by Unesco.

I think her work is gorgeous. I love the pure simplicity of her work and her electric mix of patterns and textures.

I have also included some images from a local illustrator, Tamsin Ainslie. Tams work follows suit with gorgeous simple illustrations mixed with collage and text.

Enjoy!

Are Video Games To Real ??

Manhunt

A video game by Rockstar Games, was released at the end of 2003 and has become one of 2004s biggest selling titles. It has been described as one of the most visceral and intense videogames ever made because of it very realistic graphics. (The objective of the game is to escape from a prison and in doing so to kill as many people as possible for the omnipresent narrators snuff film). Outrage about the games content as well as its extremely realistic images surrounded its release.

What ever happened to games like Super Mario ,Donkey Kong that have been extremely popular and successful.

In July 2004 a boy was killed in Britain by another boy who was said to be obsessed with the game Manhunt, prompting further outrage and controversy.

The media effects debate was also stirred up again by this event. In Australia, the Office of Film and Literature banned the game from being sold in stores. New Zealand also banned the game the first ever to be banned in the country

The events also added more fire to the Australian censorship debate with the Victorian Government calling for the addition of a category to the classification system to allow the game to be sold in Australia, while other groups called for a total ban on the game and others like it. Organisations like the Interactive Entertainment Association of Australia (IEAA) claimed that by banning such games, the right of adults to choose what material they want to consume was jeopardised. The Opposition Leader in the West Australian government branded the game as excessively brutal and violent and said that it rewards and praises the player for the more violent and the more brutal the killings and bashings are.

Manhunt and other overly violent and highly realistic video games have prompted widespread debate and controversy over its content. The increased graphical capabilities of software technology has meant the themes within the game are heightened through real-life graphics. This is very much like what happened with Mortal Kombat in 1992. Its graphics were extremely realistic for the time period.

Overall the violence in videogames debate is a longstanding and enduring issue that has not changed dramatically in its few decades of existence.

Brianna's 4th/major case study

I've decided to do my last case study on something that I'm interested in.

This is Packaging and focusing on perfume packaging, as I love perfume and enjoy exquisite high end perfumes from around the world.

Packaging is and area in graphic design and design I would like to see myself working in once I have finished my studies. I hope to one day get to work for a company in this field. If I do achieve this I would like 2 make packaging that is beautiful and reusable (keep sakes and nice extras u get when purchasing the product). Reason for this is I feel there is so much wastage in packaging these days and we pay so much for it why not get benefit out of what we are paying for and make it useful not just rubbish thrown out.

99 Ways To Tell A Story - Exercises In Style
Matt Madden. Jonathan Cape, 2006. Matt Madden's Exercises in Style is a series of one-page comics that tell the same story in a variety of ways. Inspired by Raymond Queneau's 1947 work of the same title, which told a simple story in ninety-nine different styles and genres – haiku, sonnet, book-jacket blurb – Madden does the same but in different styles of comics – Marvel superhero, R. Crumb, HergĂ©, even as a map or the Bayeux Tapestry. Or he uses varying points of view, visual and verbal parodies, even radical reshuffling of the elements of the story. The result is funny, inspiring, and genuinely clever. 206 pages.

Studies for Hiram Pantoum
I've been working for a while—where I can find the time—on a series of comics based on the poetry form called the pantoum. You can read about the form and see an example I did using a comic by Tom Hart

Variations on Matt Madden’s comic activity

I'm at the point of inking an original 4-page comic called "Hiram Pantoum" and thought I'd share a few preparatory sketches for the final art.

Matt Madden’s improvised comic activity. If you explore the comments you will find several links. Two variations on the activity that I found to be particularly fruitful.
